Visual Art at Harvest 2011
1 Sep 2011
The countdown has begun for NVA’s Glasgow Harvest, where you will be able to see the unique works of the four commissioned artists: 85A Collective, Pidgin Perfect, Rachel Mimiec and Stephen Skrynka. Inspired by food, place and community, interactive pieces will come to life through the participation of local people, in the form of one off site-specific performances as well as permanent installations.
85A Collective will create a striking site-specific puppet theatre for Harvest South at Urban Roots in Toryglen on Sat 10 September, with performances throughout the day. Fesco the Giant – a reworking of Jack and the Bean Stalk – will use puppets, promenade performance, audience participation and costumes made from edible plants.
Pidgin Perfect have been working closely with Kennyhill Allotments to create a long-lasting legacy from Harvest East on Sat 17 September – an abstract community dining table will create spaces for preparing food, eating, sitting, playing, planting and storing whilst bringing the community together throughout the year.
Harvest North at the Concrete Garden will be a colourful affair on Sat 24 September, with textile bunting created by gardeners, community groups and artist Rachel Mimiec, who will also be creating digital-printed tablecloths and textile-wrapped harvest gifts using the Japanese folding technique, Furoshiki.
Stephen Skrynka will be working with communities to design and build a pizza oven from scratch in Woodlands Community Garden for Harvest West on Sat 8 October. He will then be cooking pizzas on the day as part of his work, asking people to bring their own toppings or pick things from the garden.
All this plus live music, communal cooking, foodsharing, workshops and competitions.
