New Home Office regulations for visiting artists

The Home Office recently introduced new restrictions on international artists and academics visiting the UK for talks, temporary exhibitions, concerts or artists' residencies. Visitors now have to submit to a series of arduous and expensive procedures to get their visa, and then more bureaucratic controls when they are in the UK. Already a series of concerts and residencies have been cancelled.

Footage from Dreamspace Accident

North East England newspaper The Journal have posted youtube footage of the moment when Maurice Agis' inflatable Dreamspace sculpture lifted into the air, killing two women. Agis has been charged with gross negligence and two counts of manslaughter, and his trial continues at Newcastle Crown Court. The prosecution allege that the artist is liable because he did not ensure that independent tests were conducted on the sculpture by any qualified engineers.

Politics: Artist in Court over Inflatable Sculpture Deaths

The BBC has reported that Maurice Agis, a London based sculptor, has appeared in court in Newcastle, charged with manslaughter and a breach of the Health and Safety Act. The charges were brought after a tragic incident in July 2006 when 2 people were killed and 13 injured after an inflatable sculpture by Mr Agis turned over and apparently became airborne.

The letter reflected the concerns of artists who attended the meeting about the formation of Creative Scotland, and was forwarded to the relevant parties. This reply is from Aileen Campbell MSP, South of Scotland Region. Meeting organisers Leigh french and Guyan Porter have since circulated a respone to this letter, which raises further points they wish to be clarified. SAC Lottery Capital Small Grants Update

A closing date of 2 February 2009 has been set for applications to the Scottish Arts Council's Lottery Capital Small Grants Scheme. This is because SAC are considering changing the scheme from a rolling programme to fixed application submission dates in 2009/10. A further announcement will be made regarding future submission dates in the spring of 2009.

Scottish Planning Policy may Impact on Public Art

On 15 November 2007, the Government published the eagerly awaited Scottish Planning Policy 11: Open Space and Physical Activity, which, for the first time, requires all Scottish Council's to carry out audits of the open space within their settlements and to produce Open Space Strategies. Local Authorities must now assess their open spaces, and address how they meet communities needs. Will this lead to more opportunities for public art commissioning?
