Suzanne Lacy's Public+Artist Project

15 May 2007

As part of WACK! Art and the feminist revolution exhibition at Los Angeles’ Museum of contemporary art (MOCA) artist Suzanne Lacy currently working here in Scotland as part of a PAR+RS’ seminar series, Working in Public-art, practice and policy has extended the participatory and discursive strategies within her work into the museum.

The project aims:

to enhance and deepen visitor experience in conjunction with the exhibition, WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution. The Public + Artist Project – Stories of work and survival builds on the feminist art legacy of activism around women’s issues and fostering communication between women to improve their social conditions. The project is built on the feminist art premise that the private lives of women had formerly unrecognized public consequence, an idea that remains current.

“The project has involved Masters of Public Art Studies graduate students from USC and other female artists and activists in the Los Angeles area working directly with a diverse groups of Los Angeles working women, including nurses, teachers, home care workers, police officers, clerical temps, bike messengers and others gathered in small groups by profession or common interest in the semi-private, semi-public space near the entrance of the exhibition. For many of the women, this was the first time they had visited the MOCA .

The specially created exhibition website contains photographs and recordings of conversations, podcasts, information on related events and an array of valuable links and other resources.

Note: Working in Public: Art, practice and policy is a collaboration between PAR+RS and On The Edge Research at Gray’s School of Art. The seminars are part of PAR+RS’ commitment to professional development and learning opportunities.

The exhibition runs until July 16th
