Scottish Sculpture Workshop Reveals New Director

23 Feb 2010

Dr Nuno Sacramento will take up the post of Director of Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW) in April 2010.

Dr Sacramento is no stranger to Aberdeenshire, having previously been based in Aberdeen and Huntly, leading projects such as the Six Cities Design Festival, and Art Cup Salon des Refusés, with artist Roderick Buchanan. He also produced an analysis of Deveron Arts’ methodologies in a report to which Patrick Semple responded in his Dec 2008 PAR+RS Feature The Town is the Venue: The Time is Now

Most recently, Dr Sacramento’s practice has revolved around a two year period of Post Doctoral research as Shadow Curator at the Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, through working in close collaboration with the faculty???s Director, Professor Auxiliar Luís Jorge Gonçalves. During this time Dr Sacramento also acted as Shadow Curator alongside Claudia Zeiske at Deveron Arts, and alongside Jeanne van Heeswijk at The Blue House [editor’s note – The Blue House is a fascinating project – check it out here ]

???We are delighted to welcome Dr Sacramento to Scottish Sculpture Workshop ??? this is a period of real change and development, and we are confident that Dr Sacramento will bring us a fresh, strong perspective to take us forward, both in programming and in profile.???
- Jim Buckley, Chairman of SSW Board.

???I am very glad to be returning to Aberdeenshire, and to be working with Scottish Sculpture Workshop ??? this is a unique opportunity to contribute substantially to the development of an already established organisation, and I am looking forward to getting started.???
- Dr Nuno Sacramento

Dr Sacramento joins SSW at a critical point, as the organisation prepares to invest over £570,000 in Capital Development to the buildings and facilities on the site in Lumsden. SSW will re-open later this year with brand new facilities and a vision for the future that is underpinned by the workshop’s highly successful past.

Outgoing Director Hilary Nicoll is leaving SSW a much strengthened arts organisation. During her six year tenure she has developed SSW???s reputation though new international and public programmes. She created opportunities for many artists, both established and up-and-coming, to undertake residencies and other projects in Lumsden and beyond. These projects included the GANGHUT Gala day, ‘A Garden Tale’ exhibition at Leith Hall, and the ‘Newfoundland’ residencies at the Venice Biennale. Nicoll also developed and implemented the strategy that successfully secured the funding necessary for our Capital Development project; the vital investment that the new Director will build from. Nicoll will now go on to develop her own freelance projects in Aberdeenshire and further afield.
