Scapa Flow Visual Artist Residency
22 Aug 2011
The Scapa Flow Landscape residency is a collaboration between the Scapa Flow Landscape Partnership and the Pier Arts Centre and aims to appoint an innovative visual artist in residence to celebrate and respond to the many and varied aspects of the landscape and culture surrounding Scapa Flow.
The residency is funded through the Scapa Flow Landscape Partnership Scheme, which, supported through funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Scottish Government, the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, Leader and Orkney Islands Council, aims to create a deeper and more unified understanding of the Scapa Flow landscape area.
The residency has a strong collaborative focus to it and the successful artist will be involved in researching ideas in consultation with the local community and developing new work that explores one or more of the four themes contained within the project: Landscapes of War, Landscapes of Peace, Natural Landscapes, Celebration and Communication. The artist will have the flexibility to work for a 12 week period, beginning in Autumn 2011 through to Spring 2012 working towards a public presentation or exhibition of the project outcomes in June 2012.
The Scapa Flow Landscape Partnership Scheme aims to highlight the significance and importance of the landscape character and heritage of the Scapa Flow area and through a wide range of projects conserve, enhance and promote the distinctiveness of the location.
The area encompasses a highly significant natural landscape with distinctive geological features as well as important terrestrial and marine habitats. The built environment surrounding Scapa Flow: the military buildings and structures; the Flotta Oil terminal; as well as the architecture of domestic dwellings reflects the rich history of human occupation since Neolithic times.
Application should be submitted to the Pier Arts Centre no later than 5pm, Monday 29 August.
This opportunity is available in: Orkney Islands
