Planting Day breathes new life into Madeira Cove

30 Sep 2010

A team of local Weston-super-Mare residents armed with gardening gloves and kneepads gathered to help in the next stage of the reinvigoration of Madeira Cove on Tuesday 21st September. Madeira Cove is the site of one of the Wonders of Weston, a new public art programme for Weston-super-Mare, which will launch in October 2010. The Planting Day was organised by Situations and Field Art Projects, the public art commissioners behind the Wonders of Weston.

Continuing the renovation of the site that began in June 2010, Treble Landscape Design and the team of volunteers spent a whole day planting a range of plants including maritime species, which reflect the natural flora of the area, along with plants such as wild leeks and rock sea lavender as well as more ephemeral species.

The planting strategy was conceived by Bath-based landscape architects Grant Associates as part of their overall scheme for Madeira Cove. A significant amount of work has been done over the past few months to clear the garden and add interest all year round. The redesign forms part of contemporary artist Tania Kovats??? vision for the Cove and will accompany an artwork which will be unveiled at the programme???s launch on 29th October 2010. Together artwork and garden will create an exciting new space for the public to enjoy, with outstanding views out towards Steep Holm and back across Weston Bay.

The Wonders of Weston programme has been funded by the Sea Change initiative and managed by North Somerset Council, and it has also delivered the John Maine Arch and the Water Adventure Play Park in Weston-super-Mare.
