Dumfries and Galloway Arts Association seeks art or design graduate to work as assistant to Dr Jan Hogarth, Public Art Manager. Deadline: Monday 17 May 2010.

Background: Dumfries and Galloway Arts Association???s public art team have developed a number of innovative and exciting public and environmental art projects for the Dumfries and Galloway region. The public art team works with regional, national and international artists to develop a sense of place and identity for the areas towns and surrounding Landscape. We are currently working with Charles Jencks, Andy Goldsworthy, Dalziel and Scullion, Matt Baker and Landlab on a series of exciting developments and are involved in advising on the design and architecture of DGAA???s new organisational web site.

Opportunity: Art or design graduate with an interest in public art and design to work as an assistant for Dr Jan Hogarth, Public Art Manager at Dumfries and Galloway Arts Association for 3 days a week, initially for 3 months.

Person Specification

  • A graduate interested in pursuing a career in art management or arts administration.
  • He/She will have a good understanding of the creative process and good design skills.
  • An interest in the wider benefits of public and environmental art.
  • The candidate will have very good interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate through visual, verbal and written medias.
  • Well organised and able to prioritise tasks
  • Able to take direction as well as working well as part of a team.

Main Tasks

  • Undertake research into the benefits of public art.
  • Helping to evaluate projects and set up seminars and workshops.
  • Overseeing public art commissions and developing funding applications under public art managers guidance
  • Talking and listening to artists about their ideas and communicating these ideas to stakeholders.
  • Admin work including, drafting press releases, checking budgets and taking notes of meetings.
  • Managing the design ambitions and architecture of DGAA???s new web site giving the candidate an opportunity to get a background about the organisation and its projects.

Hours and general terms and conditions

  • 24 hours per week for 3 months.
  • Holidays to be agreed
  • Based at DGAA offices at Gracefield Art Centre, Dumfries.
  • Line Manager, Dr Jan Hogarth, Public Art Manager.
  • Pay: £10 per hour, plus travel.
