National Theatre of Scotland seeks Photographer in Residence

The National Theatre of Scotland, in association with the Weekend Herald is offering a 1 year residency opportunity to a professional photographer. Deadline: July 5, 2010.

The post will be the National Theatre of Scotland???s first ever Photographer in Residence.

This residency offers an opportunity for a professional photographer to work with the National Theatre of Scotland to gain exclusive access to actors, backstage activity and the touring life of the Company and to contribute to the vital legacy and archive of the work of Scotland???s national theatre.

Some of the images produced during the residency will be published in the Weekend Herald, some will feature in publicity materials for the Company and all will subsequently form part of an exhibition to celebrate five years of the National Theatre of Scotland in 2011.

The prize:
A £5,000 fee and 12 month contract to become the National Theatre of Scotland???s Photographer in Residence. The residency will result in the photographer capturing a series of exclusive pictures for publication within the Weekend Herald and publicity materials for the National Theatre of Scotland, subsequently forming part of an exhibition to celebrate five years of the National Theatre of Scotland in 2011.

How to enter:
Please send your five favourite pictures (300 kb per image only) including one portrait picture, one action shot and one picture showing a live event, in jpeg format to recruitment@nationaltheatrescotland.com within one email. Please include your first name and surname in each of the file names and number individually. For example Rebecca Brown 1. For each image file please give a corresponding description including the title of work (if applicable), date executed and any brief narrative (150 words max) necessary to inform the judges about the picture. Please also attach a CV (two sides of A4 only, including contact details: name, address and daytime telephone number) and a covering letter (one side of A4 only) letting the judges know why you would like to be appointed and what you could bring to the role.

Photographs submitted must be your own work, must not be copied, must not contain any third party materials and/or content that you do not have permission to use and must not otherwise be obscene, defamatory or in breach of any applicable legislation or regulations.

Judging panel:
Artistic Director of National Theatre of Scotland, Head of the Sunday Herald Picture Desk and David Eustace, world renown and award winning photographer.

Monday July 5, 2010 (inclusive)

Recruitment process:
5 shortlisted applicants will be selected and invited for an interview the week of July 12, 2010.

Decision announced:
July 25, 2010.

Details:
The judging panel will be looking for originality and creativity. The judging panel???s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The five shortlisted finalists will receive an invite for an interview the week of July 12, 2010. The overall winner will receive a £5,000 fee and 12 month contract to become the National Theatre of Scotland???s Photographer in Residence. The residency will result in the photographer capturing a series of exclusive pictures for publication within the Weekend Herald and publicity materials for the National Theatre of Scotland, subsequently forming part of an exhibition to celebrate five years of the National Theatre of Scotland in 2011. The Weekend Herald to be granted the right to use material submitted solely to the competition for publication purposes only. It is expected that the appointed photographer will
1) spend a minimum of 20 days working with the National Theatre of Scotland;
2) liaise closely with the National Theatre of Scotland???s press office to arrange schedules for photo opportunities and to discuss photo opportunities;
3) produce a body of work illustrating a diverse range of National Theatre of Scotland???s activities, including portraits of artists, participants, audiences and staff;
4) attend an agreed number of meetings at the Company base to discuss the residency and photographic opportunities;
5) liaise with the National Theatre of Scotland and associates on the production of the touring exhibition;
6) be able to take up the appointment at the beginning of August 2010;
7) photographers must be resident in Scotland;
8) all applicants must have engaged in paid work as a photographer within the last 12 months.

Payment: £5,000, or the equivalent rate of approximately 20 days at £250 per day. This post is offered on a freelance basis. The contract period is fixed term until the end of July 2011 with The National Theatre of Scotland. The photographer will be expected to work a minimum of 20 days with the National Theatre of Scotland across Scotland. Exact days will be negotiated with the Company. The National Theatre of Scotland accepts no responsibility for email entries that are incomplete or lost. Proof of submission is not proof of receipt. Each entry must be accompanied by a completed CV and covering letter as detailed in the main body of the competition text. All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. Copyright of images submitted to the competition shall remain with the photographer, however you will grant a license to NTS for the pictures to be used in publication both on and off line. Emailed entries cannot be returned to entrants. National Theatre of Scotland reserves the right to alter the promotion mechanism or terms and conditions at any time. The winner will be contacted and will be supplied with details on how to arrange their prize. The winner must agree to participate in reasonable post-promotional activity. Usual Weekend Herald rules apply. The editor???s decision is final.
