Intersections: critical dialogues on public art

27 Jan 2010

Intersections is a new initiative from Newcastle University, generating critical dialogue about public art practice and leading pioneering practice-based and theoretical research.

Intersections links Fine Art at Newcastle University with the wider cultural sector through events and research projects which draw together practitioners, theorists, sector organisations, policy makers and the wider public. Underpinning our work is this ethos of collaboration, working with artists and organisations outside the University to examine issues arising from the creative friction inherent in the interaction of public art practice, policy and public space.

At the centre of our activity is the Intersections website www.intersectionspublicart.org.uk. The aim of the website is to provide space for open, critical dialogue on public art practice. The website profiles Intersections projects, which range from projects undertaken by staff, research fellows and artists in residence to student research. It details and archives our events, which can be open public forums to closed focused discussion groups, and offers the opportunity to engage in dialogue around the topics raised by our activities. To get involved in our forthcoming event Planetary Breakdown: autonomous infrastructures for sustainable futures (part of AV Festival 2010: Energy and in partnership with The Arts Catalyst and AV Festival) see the events listing on PAR+RS or visit our website. The features section is regularly updated with artworks, podcasts or written pieces related to the core issues we???re thinking about or in response to our projects. You can become a member of the website and this enables you to contribute to discussions, comment on artists??? projects and ???follow??? any activity of particular interest. Members can also elect to profile themselves in our directory. For general updates on interesting things we hear about public art, and to be the first to find out our latest news, you can also follow us on Twitter or become a fan of our Facebook page (search ???intersectionspublicart???). Get involved and spread the word.
