GSS have secured a new, permanent home.
Their new premises will open in Spring 2012 with a major new commission for Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art.
Their unique centre for research, production, presentation and the dissemination of contemporary sculptural practices will join the growing cultural quarter around Glasgow’s canal, including National Theatre of Scotland, Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Scottish Opera and The Glue Factory.
David Watt, Director of GSS says:
“The move to Speirs Locks marks an important development for Glasgow Sculpture Studios. As well as being a permanent base, the new premises will enable us to increase the number of studios and improve our production facilities. The new galleries, which will be launched with our 2012 GI show, will offer greater flexibility for presentation of work created at GSS, and the improved education facilities will enable us to expand this important aspect of our work.
“Being part of a wider cultural community is also an exciting prospect for our studio holders and members offering many opportunities for artistic collaboration with organisations based both within and outwith the Whisky Bond.”
From 2012 GSS will be located on the first three floors of the Whisky Bond, a 100,000 sq ft red brick building that is about to undergo a £2.5m redevelopment. The remaining four floors of the imposing 7-storey building will be occupied by a range of creative businesses. This ambitious redevelopment of the Whisky Bond is the latest contribution to the creative-led regeneration of the Speirs Locks being brought forward by the Glasgow Canal Regeneration Partnership.
