Call for artists: Kennedale Transportation Operations Public Art Project

Kennedale Transportation Operations is a complex that will hold facilities for paving, road repair, sign production, seasonal road maintenance equipment and other equipment.

The proposed development consists of expansions and new construction additions to the existing site currently occupied by Pavement Management and Roadway Maintenance. A new single storey service building to accommodate the consolidated Traffic Operations is placed on the west site. Additions to the existing operations of Pavement Management and Road Maintenance are implemented on the east part of the site.

Artwork Opportunity

This is an exterior public art commission, which shall be discreet or integrated with the project site locations, with a total budget of $180,000 CAD (inclusive). A full package containing renderings, art location details and project description will be made available to all shortlisted artists upon notification.

Artwork Design Parameters

The artwork must adhere to the following design parameters:

  • Do not cause opportunity for access to restricted areas (i.e. do not build in such a manner as to allow climbing to areas not normally accessible to the public);
  • Ensure artwork does not pose a risk of injury to the public (example: sharp points,
    slip hazards, etc.);
  • Meet fire codes with respect to flammability, etc.;
  • Artwork must be vandal resistant;
  • Artwork must not interfere with the operation and serviceability of the building, and the line-of-sight of security cameras;
  • Meet all Alberta building code standards.

Budget: $180,000 CAD (maximum, all inclusive)
Deadline for Submissions: 4:30 pm on Friday, November 25th, 2011
Installation: Summer 2013
