Big things on the beach - Wonder
14 May 2007
Big things on the beach have just appointed Glasgow based artist Hill Jephson Robb as artist in residence. Working from the beach in edinburgh’s Portobello, over the period of a month, the artist aims to build a temporary artwork that will transform the landscape.
As Hill Jephson Robb writes, “The landscape of Portobello Beach will be transformed by the presence of the ambitious and temporary art work WONDER, which takes the form of three large pyramids created from thousands of filled Hessian sand bags, a sandbag for each Portobello household”. The participatory approach developed by the artist aims to involve as many Portobello residents in the process as possible, stimulating new interest and use of the beachfront and promenade. Over the period of the residency PAR+RS will be posting more information on the project’s progress and development.
If you’re interested in seeing the work on site, Hill Jephson Robb begins work on May 21st and will be there until the launch event on June 21st, coinciding with the summer solstace.
