Detours Discussion 8 February 2012, 9.30am – 6pm The Lighthouse, 11 Mitchell Lane, Glasgow, G1 3NU
THE COMMON GUILD and THE GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART present Detours Discussion, a one-day symposium about programme and place.
How does context affect a programme? Does it at all? Should it? And can a programme affect a context? This event brings together a range of views around these questions from leading international curators and museum directors.
There are many contextual factors that can affect contemporary art programmes, from local politics and finance, through institutional history, to current cultural ambitions and geography. Whether in and for building-based, formal institutions, or in more porous situations including ‘public art’ commissioning, context plays a part in the making of a programme. The ‘Detours’ discussion is an opportunity for those involved in programming to hear from colleagues about their approaches in different contexts. Is it appropriate or relevant today to imagine that a programme can instill change in a given context? Or is an over-attention to context a constraint to creative programming?
Speakers include:
- Mike Crang, professor at Durham University with an interest in cultural geography. His work considers the theorisation of space, heritage and belonging, and explores how this intersects with the media.
- Nina Möntmann, curator and professor and Head of Department of Art Theory and the History of Ideas at the Royal Institute of Art (KKH) in Stockholm.
- Andrea Schlieker, freelance curator, lecturer and writer. Curator of the Folkestone Triennial 2008 & 2011.
- Toby Paterson, artist.
The day will be chaired by:
- Simon Groom, Director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
- Katrina Brown, Director of The Common Guild and The Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art 2010 and 2012.
