New Beginnings is a collection of work commissioned by the charity New Paintings In Hospitals (Scotland). The work was commissioned from 20 artists living and working in Scotland. All the artworks are two-dimensional using a variety of media: oil , acrylic, watercolour, print, sandblasted glass and mixed media. The work is sited within the public spaces of maternity units across Scotland.

Funding purpose

Towards the cost of commissioning 20 Scottish contemporary artists to produce work for 50 maternity units throughout Scotland.

Consultation & Commissioning Process

The artists were selected from a long-list of 31 individuals nominated by the Paintings in Hospitals purchasing committee. The brief was drawn up following a planned consultative process involving representatives of hospital staff and patients; Scottish Arts Council; healthcare and arts organisations; and artists.

Fifteen maternity units across Scotland were consulted via a questionnaire as to the desirability of new artwork in the hospital environment. The feedback was largely enthusiastic confirming the conviction of Paintings in Hospitals that the artworks would be beneficial both to the aesthetics of the environment and those who stay, work and visit the units.
