The building of a new Tourist Information Centre in Dumfries was an opportunity to integrate contemporary artwork into the design and layout of this public facility. The commissioned artworks include textiles, glass and metal and are designed to enhance the visitor experience. Signage, orientation, seating and lighting are used to orientate the visitor with focal points created through sculpture and installations.

Funding purpose
Towards the cost of commissioning a series of artworks for the new Tourist Information Centre in Dumfries.

Consultation & Commissioning Process

Consultation within this project occured between artists and architects towards integrating the artwork into the fabric and design of the building. Community collaboration was a feature of the textile installation. The work installed was co-created by the artist and community groups. Community involvement was specified in the artist brief for the textile installation.

Project managment, including the commissioning of artists was undertaken by Dumfries & Galloway Arts Association. The commissioning process took different forms including open competition, direct invitation to shortlist and direct commission.

Outcomes

  • Creative external lighting: enhancing the building exterior at night
  • Seating: handcarved and dyed local elmwood
  • Craft display cabinets: ash and Ellisland elmwood
  • Textile Installation: applique and embroidered fabric hanging
  • Glass installation & courtyard: stained glass design relating to carved sandstone rocks in courtyard area
  • Entrance pend: brick wall with stainless steel mirrors
