” Artists were involved with the design of the school from an early stage, resulting in an unusual and stimuating school environment – artworks are integral to the structure rather than applied as an after-thought”.
(Scottish Executive (2003) School Design. p33)

The Square is a key public space situated between the new secondary school building and the community building. Artist Gordon Young collaborated with landscape architect Sally Rickett to create a walkway and seating inspired by the geographic location of the school.

Consultation & Commissioning Process

The involvement of artists within the development of the new connunity school in Auchterarder was developed through wide community consultation prior to the project commencing. An education programme was developed where teachers, parents, pupils and others engaged with the design and making process. The artist and PACE coordinated workshops that described the creative process involved in the realisation of a public art intervention. The workshops were aimed at pupils in the upper secondary stages.

The whole public art project for this neww community school was managed by PACE. Artist’s brief was developed by PACE in collaboration with Perth & Kinross Council, the project architects and the landscape architects.
A long list of 20 artists was sourced by PACE and a selection panel invited four artists for the four phases of the whole community school project. Gordon Young was selected for Phase 4.
