With the advent of a devolved Scottish Parliament and as part of the 700th Anniversary celebrations for the Battle of Stirling Bridge, ten Scottish flags were commissioned from ten artists. The flags are designed to reflect the artists’ emblematic vision of Scotland. This project was part of wider programme of artistic and cultural events initiated by Stirling Council as part of the Anniversary celebrations.

The intention behind New National Flags for Scotland was to reflect and explore the theme of Scottish cultural diversity and identity whilst providing access to contemporary artworks in an area actively developing the provision of art in public places.

Funding purpose

Towards the cost of commissioning Scottish based artists to design new national flags for Scotland.

Consultation & Commissioning Process

Public art agency, Ginkgo managed the commissioning and consultation process. Consultation was necessary with town planning and the flag-makers regarding the locations of flags and the construction of the artists’ designs.

A public talk offered the general public the opportunity to hear about the ideas and processes behind the imagery used on the flags.

This was a limited competition inviting 15 selected artists to submit designs – 10 artists were then commissioned by a selection panel. Selection panel was representative of all interest groups including artists and local authority.
