The Lauriston Project

Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh NHS Trust

Sep 1996 to Oct 1997

Dental Institute, City of Edinburgh

This project involved the commissioning of four artists creating artworks integrated into the refurbished fabric of the new site for the Dental Hospital. The aim of the project was to move away from the purely decorative and the stand alone artwork to creating a series of different environments intended to stimulate, relax and be enjoyed by those visiting and working in the hospital. This was achieved through engaging artists in the earliest stages of the design process.

Consultation & Commissioning Process

Artists liaised with the design team in the realisation of their proposals. Meetings with staff, patients and hosptital visitors also supported the creative process of the artists whilst informing the general public of the processes of public art.

These artists were commissioned through a process of limited competition with interviews of 11 shortlisted artists, four of which were commissioned. The judging panel was representative of “the different interest groups”: client(patient) representative, architect, hospital employee; hospital arts coordinator and disability/access representative.
