The Saltire Centre
Glasgow Caledonian University
Oct 2005 to Jan 2006
Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow City
Letter cutting artist Gary Breeze was commissioned to design, manufacture and install a sculptural series of 13 stone blocks within the external courtyard area. This carved stone installation reflects the ideals of the Saltire Centre as a place of learning and culture and acts as seating and an informal meeting place as well as a work of art. The blocks feature engraved stanzas from a Latin poem by Horace together with translated texts in English and modern Scots dialect.

Consultation & Commissioning Process

An education programme of workshops took place through the university’s involvement with the GOALS project (Greater Opportunities of Access and Learning with Schools). Other artist-led workshops were also developed and opened to the university community and general public.
A “Listening Post” located beside the artwork was designed to provide audio interpertation access.
Public Art consultants Art in Partnership managed the commissioning and project process. Gary Breeze was selected by a panel using a shortlist prepared by Art in Partnership. The artist’s brief was developed prior to selection and in collaboration with architects and interior designers.
