In the village of Golspie, artist Nigel Mullan worked with local school and community groups towards the creation of specially designed features for the community garden. Consultation & Commissioning Process
This project built on positive relationships developed between artist and community through a pilot artist-in-residence scheme at the local high school (prior to this project). As is the case with many public art project, the consultation process can also fall under the heading of “education” as awareness is raised and thinking is challenged. This community garden project involved various education-consultation scenarios with school pupils and staff as well as school-leavers and village residents.
Formal consultation was also sought with the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens, and the local visual arts group, “visualartssutherland”.
Direct invitation of Nigel Mullan based on artistic merit, previous community work and the level of established artist-community rapport.
Outcomes
- Artist designed trellis screening
- Central sculptural artwork of incised slate
